Saying this, the brahmins left, and the townspeople heard the news. Grieving, they blamed fate, which had set out to make a swan and made a crow. Kalaketu took the purohita back to his house and sent word of it to the ascetic-king. That villain sent letters everywhere, and all the kings came with armies arrayed. They besieged the city to the beat of drums,. All the warriors fought valiantly and fell, and the king fell to the ground with his brother. Not one of Satyaketu's line survived; how could a brahmin's curse prove false? The victors went home in triumph. Yajnavalkya tells Bharadvaja: for one against whom fate turns, dust becomes like Mount Meru, a father like Yama, and a rope like a snake.
