The defeated king in false guise

Wandering in the forest, the king came upon an ashrama. There lived, dressed as a muni, a king whose land Pratapbhanu had seized and who had fled the battle, leaving his army. Ashamed, he had not gone home, and too proud to submit. Swallowing his anger like a pauper, he lived in the forest in an ascetic's garb. Pratapbhanu went up to him, and the false ascetic recognised him at once. The thirsty king did not recognise him; seeing his fine garb, he took him for a great muni. He got down from his horse and bowed but shrewdly kept back his name. Seeing him thirsty, the ascetic showed him a lake, and the king gladly bathed and drank, his horse too.
