The tapas of Manu and Shatarupa

They lived on greens, fruits and roots, remembering Brahman who is being, consciousness and bliss. Then for Hari they gave up even those and lived on water. One longing filled their hearts without pause: to see with their own eyes that supreme Lord, without qualities, undivided, endless and beginningless, whom the Vedas describe as "not this, not this", pure awareness and bliss, free of limitation, from a portion of whom many Shivas, Brahmas and Vishnus arise. Even such a Lord is ruled by His servants and takes a body of leela for His devotees; if this word of the Vedas is true, they reasoned, our wish will be fulfilled. So passed six thousand years on water, then seven thousand on air alone.
