Slain by the Lord, Jaya and Vijaya were still not freed, for the brahmin's word bound them to three births. For their sake the Lord, who loves His devotees, took a body once, with Kashyapa and Aditi as father and mother, known then as Dasharatha and Kausalya. In that kalpa He came this way and made the world holy with His deeds. In another kalpa the devas lost every battle to Jalandhar. Shiva fought him without end, yet the mighty danava could not be killed, because his wife was supremely chaste and her virtue shielded him. The Lord then broke her vow by a trick and did the devas' work. When she learned the secret, she cursed Him in anger.
