Jaya and Vijaya fall under a curse

The Lord's fame is what devotees sing to cross the ocean of birth, and for their sake the ocean of mercy takes a body. Shiva says the causes of Shri Rama's birth are many, each more wondrous than the last, and asks Bhavani to listen closely to one or two. Jaya and Vijaya, the two beloved doorkeepers of Hari, fell under a brahmin's curse and were born as dark-natured asuras, Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha. They humbled even Indra. The Lord took the form of the Boar to kill one and of Narasimha to kill the other, spreading the fame of His devotee Prahlada. The same two were born again as the mighty rakshasas Kumbhakarna and Ravana, conquerors of the devas.
