What happens in this chapter

Without her lord, all is sorrow

Mother, father, brother, friends, parents-in-law, guru, even a fine son, Sita says: without her husband a wife finds every bond hotter than the sun. Body, wealth, home, land, city and kingdom, without a husband all of it is a gathering of grief. Pleasures are like disease, ornaments a burden, and the world like the torments of Yama. Without you, lord of my life, nothing anywhere gives me joy. As a body without life, a river without water, so is a woman without her husband. With you every joy is mine, gazing on your face bright as the autumn moon. Birds and beasts will be my family, the forest my city, bark my fine silk, and a leaf hut with you a heavenly palace.
