Rama swears to obey Janaka
Indra still worries: all lies in Bharata's hands. Janaka goes to Raghunatha, and the lamp of the solar line honours everyone. Then the priest of the Raghu line, Vasishtha, speaks in keeping with time, company and dharma. Dear Rama, he says, my view is that all should do as you command. Rama joins his palms and answers simply: with the lord of Mithila present, for me to speak would be wrong in every way. Let the king and you give the order; I swear by you I will bear it on my head. Hearing Rama swear, Janaka and the assembly shrink back; all look at Bharata's face, and no one can reply.
समय समाज धरम अविरोधा । बोले तब रघुबंस-पुरोधा ॥
जनक भरत सम्बाद सुनाई । भरत कहाउति कही सुहाई ॥
samaya samāja dharama avirodhā | bole taba raghubaṃsa-purodhā ||
janaka bharata sambāda sunāī | bharata kahāuti kahī suhāī ||
तात राम जस आयसु देहू । सो सब करइ मोर मत एहू ॥
सुनि रघुनाथ जोरि जुग पानी । बोले सत्य सरल मृदु बानी ॥
tāta rāma jasa āyasu dehū | so saba karai mora mata ehū ||
suni raghunātha jori juga pānī | bole satya sarala mṛdu bānī ||
बिद्यमान आपुनि मिथिलेसू । मोर कहब सब भाँति भदेसू ॥
राउर राय रजायसु होई । राउरि सपथ सही सिर सोई ॥
bidyamāna āpuni mithilesū | mora kahaba saba bhām̐ti bhadesū ||
rāura rāya rajāyasu hoī | rāuri sapatha sahī sira soī ||
राम सपथ सुनि सुनि जनक, सकुचे सभा समेत ।
सकल बिलोकत भरत मुख, बनइ न उतरु देत ॥
rāma sapatha suni suni janaka, sakuce sabhā sameta |
sakala bilokata bharata mukha, banai na utaru deta ||
