What happens in this chapter

Sunaina comes to Kaushalya's tent

So everyone dreams aloud, and their loving words charm the listener. Then Sita's mother sends a maid, who finds the right moment. Learning that Sita's mothers-in-law are free, the queens of Janaka come. Kaushalya receives them with honour and gives them seats fitting the hour. The courtesy and affection on both sides would melt a thunderbolt. Thrilled, limp, eyes streaming, they sit scratching the earth with their nails, lost in grief, each like an image of love for Sita and Rama, as if compassion had taken many forms to mourn. Sita's mother speaks: fate's mind is crooked; it breaks milk foam with a diamond chisel. Its doings are all poison where we hoped for nectar; crows, owls and herons everywhere, and swans only in Manasarovar.
