Bharata lists the sorrows he caused

The king kept his vow of love by dying, and the whole world witnesses my mother's evil mind. The mothers' distress is unbearable to see. I am the root of all this ruin; hearing and knowing it, I have borne every pain. I heard Rama went to the forest barefoot in a hermit's dress. Shankara is witness, I lived on through that wound. Then I saw Guha's love, and still my heart, hard as a thunderbolt, did not break. Now I have come and seen it all with my own eyes; this dull life endures everything. Even snakes on the road shed their poison before Rama, Lakshmana and Sita; who but the son of one who hated them should fate make suffer so?
