An omen and an old man's counsel

By Rama's glory and your strength, lord, the warriors boast, we will leave the army without men or horses; while we live we will not step back. Pleased, Guha orders the war drum beaten. As he speaks, someone sneezes on the left, and the omen-readers say the field looks favourable. But an old man weighs the omen and says: meet Bharata, there will be no fight. Bharata is going to persuade Rama back; the omen says there is no quarrel. Guha agrees: the old man speaks well. Fools act in haste and repent. To fight without learning Bharata's nature and conduct would be a great harm. Gather and hold the ghats, he says. I will go and meet him, learn whether he is friend, foe or neither, and then act.
