बिलपहिं बिकल भरत बिकल भाई । कौसल्याँ लिये हृदयँ लगाई ॥
भाँति अनेक भरत समुझाये । कहि बिबेक-मय बचन सुहाये ॥
bilapahiṃ bikala bharata bikala bhāī | kausalyām̐ liye hṛdayam̐ lagāī ||
bhām̐ti aneka bharata samujhāye | kahi bibeka-maya bacana suhāye ||

Kaushalya holds the weeping brothers close and calms Bharata with words of wisdom, and Bharata consoles the mothers with accounts from the Puranas and Vedas. Then, palms joined, in a voice clean of guile, he takes a terrible oath. The sin of one who kills mother, father or son, who burns a cowshed or a Brahmin village, who slays a woman or child, who poisons a friend or a king, every sin of deed, word and thought: may all of it fall on me, mother, if this plan had my consent. And may the Creator give me the end of those who leave the feet of Hari and Hara to worship terrible spirits.
