Bharata rebukes his mother
Seeing her son distraught, Kaikeyi consoles him, like rubbing salt into a burn: son, the king is not to be mourned; he enjoyed merit and fame and went at last to Indra's abode. Think so, give up grief, and rule the city with your court. Hearing this, the prince recoils as if a live coal had touched a ripe wound. Breathing hard, he says: sinful woman, you have destroyed the line in every way. If your mind was so perverse, why did you not kill me at birth? You felled the tree to water a leaf. The doha: with Dasharatha of the swan-like solar line for father and brothers like Rama and Lakshmana, I got you for a mother; against fate nothing avails.
जीवत सकल जनम-फल पाये । अन्त अमरपति सदन सिधाये ॥
अस अनुमानि सोच परिहरहू । सहित समाज राज पुर करहू ॥
jīvata sakala janama-phala pāye | anta amarapati sadana sidhāye ||
asa anumāni soca pariharahū | sahita samāja rāja pura karahū ||
सुनि सुठि सहमेउ राजकुमारू । पाकें छत जनु लाग अँगारू ॥
धीरज धरि भरि लेहिँ उसासा । पापनि सबहि भाँति कुल नासा ॥

dhīraja dhari bhari lehim̐ usāsā | pāpani sabahi bhām̐ti kula nāsā ||
जौँ पै कुरुचि रही अति तोही । जनमत काहे न मारे मोही ॥
पेड़ काटि तैं पालउ सींचा । मीन जिअन निति बारि उलीचा ॥
jaum̐ pai kuruci rahī ati tohī | janamata kāhe na māre mohī ||
per̤a kāṭi taiṃ pālau sīṃcā | mīna jiana niti bāri ulīcā ||
हंस-बंस दसरथ-जनक, राम-लखन से भाइ ।
जननी तूँ जननी भई, विधि सन कछु न बसाइ ॥
haṃsa-baṃsa dasaratha-janaka, rāma-lakhana se bhāi |
jananī tūm̐ jananī bhaī, vidhi sana kachu na basāi ||
