What answer can Sumantra give?

Sumantra goes on agonising. What will he tell the grieving mothers, or Lakshmana's mother? When Shri Rama's mother comes running like a cow remembering her calf, he must answer that Rama, Lakshmana and Vaidehi have gone to the forest. That is the joy he goes to Avadh to earn. And when the king, whose life hangs on Raghunatha, asks, with what face will he say he came back safe after seeing the princes off? Hearing their message, the king will cast off his body like a straw. The doha: his heart did not crack like drying mud when its beloved water left; fate gave him this body only for torment.
