Sita's kindness; the people show the road

The women bless Sita: may you be as dear to your husband as Parvati is to Shiva, and, goddess, do not withdraw your kindness from us. With joined palms they ask again and again that if she returns this way, she will grant them darshan, knowing them as her own servants. Sita satisfies them with sweet words, as moonlight nourishes the night lotus. Then Lakshmana, reading Raghubara's wish, gently asks the people the way. The people's joy vanishes, as if the Creator were snatching back a treasure he had given. Understanding the course of karma, they take courage, work out the easy road and tell them. Then Raghunatha sets out with Lakshmana and Janaki, turning them all back with loving words, yet carrying their hearts along.
