Rama's vow over the heap of bones

Having spoken, Sharabhanga burns his body in the fire of yoga and by Rama's grace goes to Vaikuntha. He does not merge into Hari, because he had first taken the boon of devotion that keeps the servant distinct from the Lord. The assembled rishis rejoice at his end and sing, glory to the ocean of compassion who cares for the surrendered. Rama walks on, a great band of munis following. Seeing a mound of bones, he asks what it is. The munis answer: why ask, Lord, when you see all and dwell within? The night-roaming rakshasas have eaten all these sages. Hearing this, Raghunath's eyes fill with tears. He raises his arm and vows to rid the earth of rakshasas, then visits ashram after ashram, giving joy to every muni.
