Rama's arrows fly hissing like serpents. The rakshasa warriors turn to flee, but the three brothers, Khara, Dushana and Trishira, swear to kill any who runs, so they turn back resolved to die. Rama's iron shafts cut chests, heads, arms and feet, which fall about like hills. Cut into a hundred pieces, warriors rise again by sorcery; headless trunks run on. Vultures fly off with entrails like boys flying kites. Khara, Dushana and Trishira return and hurl countless weapons; in a blink the Lord strikes each chief with ten arrows in the chest. Seeing devas afraid of fourteen thousand against one, the Lord of Maya makes the rakshasas see Rama in one another, and they kill each other. Dying with Rama's name, they gain nirvana; the devas rain flowers.
