Standing in place

A red sandstone pillar on which Skandagupta records how he saved the Gupta house and fought the Hunas.

What it says

When the fortunes of his family were tottering, the prince spent a night sleeping on the bare earth before battle. His arms “shook the earth” when he met the Hunas in combat. On victory he went to his widowed mother, as Krishna went to Devaki, and installed an image of Sharngin (Vishnu).

What it proves

It is the first Indian record of a war with the Hunas and dates their first push into the Gupta lands to the 450s.
