Jai Ganesh jai Ganesh jai Ganesh deva,
mata jaki Parvati pita Mahadeva.
Ekdant dayavant charbhujadhari,
mathe par tilak sohe muse ki savari.
Pan chadhe phal chadhe aur chadhe meva,
ladduan ka bhog lage sant karen seva.
Andhe ko ankh det kodhin ko kaya,
banjhan ko putra det nirdhan ko maya.
Sur Shyam sharan ae saphal kije seva,
jai Ganesh jai Ganesh jai Ganesh deva.
Meaning
Victory to Ganesh, victory to Ganesh, victory to Lord Ganesh, whose mother is Parvati and whose father is Mahadeva.
Single-tusked, full of mercy, four-armed, a tilak shining on his forehead, riding on a mouse.
Betel leaves, fruits and dried fruits are offered to him; laddus are his bhog, and the saints serve him.
He gives eyes to the blind and a healthy body to the leper, a son to the childless and wealth to the poor.
Sur and Shyam have come to your refuge: make their service fruitful. Victory to Ganesh, victory to Lord Ganesh.
About this bhajan
Traditional; the author is not known. Because every Hindu puja begins with Shri Ganesh, this is the aarti most north Indian children learn first, and it opens Diwali’s Lakshmi-Ganesh puja and every Ganesh Chaturthi in the Hindi belt. The closing line names “Sur Shyam”, and some read it as a signature of Surdas, but no early collection of his padas contains it, so the authorship is left open. Versions vary in a line or two; the text follows Kavita Kosh.
