About this bhajan

The Gayatri is the tenth verse of the sixty-second sukta of the third mandala of the Rigveda, revealed to Maharshi Vishvamitra, and it takes its name from its gayatri metre of three lines of eight syllables. It is addressed to Savitar, the divine impeller seen in the Sun, and asks for one thing only, that he move our minds. A boy receives it from his father or guru at Upanayana and repeats it at the three sandhyas for life. The opening "Om bhur bhuvah svah", the three vyahritis, is joined to the verse in recitation, as in the Shukla Yajurveda (Vajasaneyi Samhita 36.3). Sayana's commentary reads "bharga" as the self-luminous light of Brahman.

Ṛgveda 3.62.10 (ṛṣi Viśvāmitra, devatā Savitṛ), Sanskrit Wikisource ऋग्वेदः सूक्तं ३.६२ with Sāyaṇa's bhāṣya; vyāhṛtis as in Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā 36.3
