तुम हो जग की माता, तुम ही हो भर्ता।
भक्तन की दुख हर्ता, सुख संपति कर्ता॥

Meaning

Victory to Ambe Gauri, Mother; victory to dark Gauri. Hari, Brahma and Shiva meditate on you day and night.

Vermilion shines in the parting of your hair and a tilak of musk on your brow; two bright eyes and a lovely moon-like face.

Your body is like gold, dressed in red; a garland of red flowers and a necklace adorn your throat.

You ride the lion, holding sword and dagger; devas, men and munis serve you, and you remove their sorrows.

Earrings shine at your ears, a pearl at the tip of your nose; your radiance equals millions of moons and suns.

You crushed Shumbha and Nishumbha and slew Mahishasura; you destroyed Dhumralochana, you who are ever intoxicated with bliss.

You destroyed Chanda and Munda and Raktabija; you killed Madhu and Kaitabha both and took away the devas’ fear.

You are Brahmani and Rudrani, and you are Queen Kamala; the Agamas and Nigamas praise you; you are Shiva’s chief queen.

The sixty-four yoginis sing and Bhairava dances; the tal and mridang play, and the damaru sounds.

You are the mother of the world and its sustainer, remover of devotees’ sorrows and giver of happiness and wealth.

Your four arms are radiant, one in the gesture of granting boons; men and women who serve you receive what their hearts desire.

A golden plate is set out with agar, camphor and wicks; on its stand shine lights like millions of jewels.

Whoever sings this aarti of Mother Ambe, says Shivanand Swami, receives happiness and prosperity.

About this bhajan

Traditional. Like “Om Jai Shiv Omkara”, its last line names Shivanand Swami. It is the Devi aarti of north India, sung in every home through both Navratris and at every Durga and Vaishno Devi shrine. The stanzas follow the Durga Saptashati closely: Madhu and Kaitabha, Mahishasura, Dhumralochana, Chanda and Munda, Raktabija, Shumbha and Nishumbha, the battles of the Devi Mahatmya in a few lines each. In singing, “maiya” is added after the first half of each line.

Traditional aarti (closing line names Shivanand Swami); text as on Kavita Kosh, sung repetitions omitted
