Meaning

1. I bow to the son of the Wind, home of matchless strength, his body shining like a mountain of gold, a fire to the forest of the demons, foremost among the wise, treasury of every virtue, lord of the vanaras, the chosen messenger of the Lord of the Raghus.

2. I bow to the son of the Wind, who made the ocean as small as a calf's hoofprint and the rakshasas as small as mosquitoes, the jewel in the great garland of the Ramayana.

3. I bow to the hero, joy of Anjana, who ended Janaki's grief, lord of the monkeys, slayer of Aksha, the terror of Lanka.

4. With joined palms I bow to Anjaneya, who leapt playfully across the waters of the ocean, took up the fire of Sita's sorrow, and with that very fire burnt Lanka.

5. With my head I bow to the messenger of Shri Rama, swift as the mind, fast as the wind, master of his senses, foremost of the wise, son of the Wind, leader of the vanara hosts.

6. I meditate on Anjaneya, son of the Wind, his face a deep rose, his form lovely as a golden mountain, dwelling at the foot of the parijata tree.

7. Bow to Maruti, destroyer of the rakshasas, who wherever the glory of the Lord of the Raghus is sung, is present there with palms joined above his head and eyes full of tears.

8. Intelligence, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, health, alertness and skill in speech come from remembering Hanuman.

About this bhajan

Before the Sundara Kanda is opened, and on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at the Anjaneya shrine, these verses are said in one breath. They come from different places. The first opens the Sundara Kand of Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas. "Manojavam" is verse 33 of the Rama Raksha Stotra, where it ends "sharanam prapadye"; the form here ends "shirasa namami". The fourth verse is quoted from the Mahanataka in the Shabdakalpadruma. Verses 1 to 7 are printed together as the Hanumat-pranama in the Shri Rama Nama Sankirtanam collection. The last, "buddhir balam", is a traditional shloka whose original source is not known.

Śrīrāmanāmasaṅkīrtanam, Hanumatpraṇāmaḥ 1–7, Sanskrit Wikisource (श्रीरामनामसंकीर्तनम्); verse 1 = Rāmacaritamānasa, Sundarakāṇḍa, opening śloka 3; verse 5 cf. Rāmarakṣāstotra 33; verse 8 traditional, quoted in Vānara Gītā and Padminīpariṇaya on Sanskrit Wikisource
