Meaning

Pallavi: Many are the great souls; to all of them, my salutations.

Anupallavi: Those who behold the moon-fair beauty of the Lord in the lotus of the heart and taste the bliss of Brahman.

1. The foremost of the blessed, who love the Lord who delights in Sama chant and whose grace outshines Manmatha.
2. Those who still the wanderings of the mind, that forest creature, and see his form clearly.
3. Those who at once lay the lotus of the heart at his feet.
4. Those who sing of the Supreme, the purifier of the fallen, by the true path that leads to the highest goal, and who know raga with its swara and laya through loving converse with him.
5. Those hosts of devotees on this earth who wear on their necks garlands of gems that are Hari’s qualities, and who with wisdom, friendship and compassion protect the whole world with a nectar glance.
6. Those who ever gaze on the graceful Lord with his charming gait, their bodies thrilling, sunk in an ocean of bliss, glad and full of glory.
7. Besides the great Bhagavatas, the best of munis, the Moon and the Sun, Sanaka and Sanandana, the guardians of the quarters, the devas and kimpurushas, Prahlada the son of Hiranyakashipu, Narada, Tumburu, Hanuman the son of the Wind, Shiva who wears the young moon, Shuka, Brahma and the best of brahmins, the most holy, the great, the eternal ones who always enjoy the bliss of Brahman: how many more there are!
8. Those who know your mind, which destroyed the false doctrines that keep true bhakti from being born, and who ever sing in joy of your form, your name and its glory, your valour and courage, your peaceful mind, your truthful word, O best of the Raghus.
9. Those who know the secrets of the Bhagavata, the Ramayana, the Gita, the Shruti, the Shastras and Puranas, the hidden meanings of the six paths beginning with Shaiva, and the inner minds of the thirty-three crore devas; who, through the joy of bhava, raga and laya, live long in endless happiness and are dear to Tyagaraja’s Lord.
10. Those who, when love swells threefold, remember the Name, true servants of the Lord whom Tyagaraja, Rama’s devotee, praises.

About this bhajan

Every January the river bank at Thiruvaiyaru fills with singers, famous and unknown, sitting shoulder to shoulder before Tyagaraja’s samadhi. On the day of his Aradhana they sing the five Ghana Raga Pancharatna kritis together, and Endaro Mahanubhavulu is the last. Tyagaraja does not ask anything of Rama in it. He bows instead to everyone who has loved Rama: Prahlada, Narada, Hanuman, Shuka, the rishis, and the countless unnamed bhaktas who sing with knowledge of raga and laya. A family tradition among his disciples says he sang it when the great Malayali singer Shatkala Govinda Marar came to hear him; this is told as tradition. The opening line has become the way Carnatic musicians greet an audience of rasikas.
