1. Your foot that eagerly measured the earth; the foot set down on Bali’s head; the foot that kicked the sky without fear; the foot that saved Indra, foe of Bala.
2. The foot that washed away the woman’s sin; the foot planted on the serpent’s head; the foot that Shri Lakshmi presses in love; the foot on the swift horse.
3. Your foot that grants boons to the great yogis in many ways; the foot shown at Tiru Venkatagiri as the sure refuge: your foot is the supreme abode.

About this bhajan

When Vamana grew into Trivikrama and his foot reached Brahmaloka, Brahma washed it, and that water, the Puranas say, became the Ganga. Annamacharya starts there and walks through the avataras by their feet: the step on Bali’s head, Ahalya freed by Rama’s touch, Krishna dancing on Kaliya, the Kalki horse. The last charanam brings it to Tirumala, where the right hand of the murti of Venkateshvara points down to his own feet as the place of refuge. M. S. Subbulakshmi’s recording made it known in every Telugu and Tamil home.
