A year after Panipat, Rana Sanga led the largest Rajput army of the age against Babur. Cannon, matchlocks and Babur’s flanking horse decided the day.

Babur won; Sanga was wounded and carried from the field, and died within a year.

01The armies

Sanga had taken Bayana and his advance had shaken Babur’s camp. The Baburnama admits that his men were afraid; Babur broke his wine cups, swore off drink and called his army to holy war. Around Sanga stood Rajput houses from Marwar, Amber, Gwalior and Chanderi, with Hasan Khan of Mewat and Mahmud Lodi. Babur dug in behind carts chained together, with cannon under Ustad Ali Quli and Mustafa between them.

02The day and after

The Rajput charges went in again and again against the guns. Babur’s flanking parties rode round both wings and closed in from behind. Sanga was struck and fell unconscious; his companions carried him away, and Jhala Ajja took up the royal insignia so the army would fight on. Hasan Khan Mewati died on the field. Sanga recovered and swore to fight again, but he died at Kalpi in January 1528, by many accounts poisoned by nobles who did not want another war.
