The Nizam, surrounded at Bhopal, signed the convention of Doraha giving Malwa to the Marathas.

01Shut in

The Nizam took up a strong position at Bhopal behind the lake, trusting his guns. Bajirao’s horse swept round him, cut off his foraging parties and stopped the convoys coming from the Deccan, while other Maratha forces held back the Mughal reinforcements from the north. Within weeks the camp was short of grain and fodder, and the Nizam tried to fall back, fighting a slow retreat under constant attack.

02Doraha

At Doraha Sarai near Sironj, in January 1738, the Nizam signed terms. He promised to obtain for the Peshwa the whole of Malwa and the land between the Narmada and the Chambal, and fifty lakh rupees for expenses. The convention was overtaken a year later by Nadir Shah’s invasion, but Malwa stayed Maratha.
