Hemu Kalani hanged at Sukkur
The nineteen-year-old Sindhi revolutionary, caught trying to derail a train carrying troops during Quit India, is hanged at Sukkur jail.
Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura become states
Under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, the old princely kingdoms of Manipur and Tripura and the Khasi–Jaintia–Garo hills of Meghalaya become full states.
