What happens in this chapter
Vastoshpati and the verses of sleep
Maharshi Vasishtha opens with one verse to Vastoshpati, the guardian of the house who drives off disease and enters every form. The next seven, which the Anukramani gives to Indra and calls the Prasvapini Upanishad, are spoken to the house dog, the tawny son of Sarama, whose teeth flash like spear points: bark at the thief, not at the singers of Indra, and sleep. Then the charm widens. Let mother and father sleep, the dog and the head of the house, all the kin. By the thousand-horned bull risen from the sea, the poet lulls everyone to sleep, down to the women resting on their couches.
यद॑र्जुन सारमेय द॒तः पि॑शङ्ग॒ यच्छ॑से ।
वी॑व भ्राजन्त ऋ॒ष्टय॒ उप॒ स्रक्वे॑षु॒ बप्स॑तो॒ नि षु स्व॑प

tvaṃ sūkarasya dardṛhi tava dardartu sūkaraḥ |
