Maharshi Vasishtha, son of Mitra and Varuna, bows in trishtubh verse to Dyava-Prithivi, Heaven and Earth, vast and worthy of worship. The poets of old set these two in front, the parents whose children are the Devas. Vasishtha asks his people to praise the first-born pair with new hymns in the seat of Rta, and calls them to come with the divine host and spread their great shelter. Many treasures are theirs to give, he says, as they gave to King Sudas; let them grant the same to us.
