What happens in this chapter

Earth who bears the mountains' weight

Atri Bhauma gives three Anushtubh verses to Prithivi, the Earth. O Earth, you bear the burden of the mountains, and with your greatness you quicken the land, O mighty one with sloping hills. The hymns ring out to you through the nights, O wide-ranging one, as you send forth plenty like a neighing horse, O bright one. With firmness you hold even the trees fast in the ground, when rain falls from the lightning of your cloud and from heaven. It is the only hymn in the Rigveda addressed to the Earth alone.
