Gathi chooses Agni as hotar

Gathi of the Kushika line, father of Vishvamitra, sings five trishtubh verses to Agni. At the offering he chooses Agni as hotar, skilled, wise, all knowing and unerring, to sacrifice to the devas for wealth and strength. He sends forth the ghee-filled ladle, which moves to the right around the devas. Protected by Agni, he hopes to share in wealth rich in offspring. Men have placed many faces of Agni; Agni is asked to bring the host of the devas. As the devas anointed him hotar and seated him, so he is asked to be helper here and to put fame into their bodies.

अ॒ग्निं होता॑रं॒ प्र वृ॑णे मि॒येधे॒ गृत्सं॑ क॒विं वि॑श्व॒विद॒ममू॑रम् ।
स नो॑ यक्षद्दे॒वता॑ता॒ यजी॑यान्रा॒ये वाजा॑य वनते म॒घानि॑

agniṃ hotāraṃ pra vṛṇe miyedhe gṛtsaṃ kaviṃ viśvavidamamūram |
sa no yakṣaddevatātā yajīyānrāye vājāya vanate maghāni

प्र ते॑ अग्ने ह॒विष्म॑तीमिय॒र्म्यच्छा॑ सुद्यु॒म्नां रा॒तिनीं॑ घृ॒ताची॑म् ।
प्र॒द॒क्षि॒णिद्दे॒वता॑तिमुरा॒णः सं रा॒तिभि॒र्वसु॑भिर्य॒ज्ञम॑श्रेत्

pra te agne haviṣmatīmiyarmyacchā sudyumnāṃ rātinīṃ ghṛtācīm |
pradakṣiṇiddevatātimurāṇaḥ saṃ rātibhirvasubhiryajñamaśret

19.3

स तेजी॑यसा॒ मन॑सा॒ त्वोत॑ उ॒त शि॑क्ष स्वप॒त्यस्य॑ शि॒क्षोः ।
अग्ने॑ रा॒यो नृत॑मस्य॒ प्रभू॑तौ भू॒याम॑ ते सुष्टु॒तय॑श्च॒ वस्व॑ः

sa tejīyasā manasā tvota uta śikṣa svapatyasya śikṣoḥ |
agne rāyo nṛtamasya prabhūtau bhūyāma te suṣṭutayaśca vasvaḥ

19.4

भूरी॑णि॒ हि त्वे द॑धि॒रे अनी॒काग्ने॑ दे॒वस्य॒ यज्य॑वो॒ जना॑सः ।
स आ व॑ह दे॒वता॑तिं यविष्ठ॒ शर्धो॒ यद॒द्य दि॒व्यं यजा॑सि

bhūrīṇi hi tve dadhire anīkāgne devasya yajyavo janāsaḥ |
sa ā vaha devatātiṃ yaviṣṭha śardho yadadya divyaṃ yajāsi

19.5

यत्त्वा॒ होता॑रम॒नज॑न्मि॒येधे॑ निषा॒दय॑न्तो य॒जथा॑य दे॒वाः ।
स त्वं नो॑ अग्नेऽवि॒तेह बो॒ध्यधि॒ श्रवां॑सि धेहि नस्त॒नूषु॑

yattvā hotāramanajanmiyedhe niṣādayanto yajathāya devāḥ |
sa tvaṃ no agne'viteha bodhyadhi śravāṃsi dhehi nastanūṣu
