What happens in this chapter
Agni guards the unborn child
Brahma Rakshoha speaks in anushtubh, the devata Agni as slayer of rakshas, to guard a mother's womb. Agni, joined with the prayer, drive from here the evil-named sickness that lies in your womb. The rishi says plainly whom he drives out: the flesh-eater who kills the embryo as it settles or stirs, or seeks to kill the newborn; the one who parts the thighs and lies between husband and wife; the one who comes to the woman in the form of a brother, a husband or a lover, or who stupefies her with sleep and darkness, wishing to kill her offspring. Each verse ends: we destroy him from here.
यस्ते॒ गर्भ॒ममी॑वा दु॒र्णामा॒ योनि॑मा॒शये॑ ।
अ॒ग्निष्टं ब्रह्म॑णा स॒ह निष्क्र॒व्याद॑मनीनशत्
yaste garbhamamīvā durṇāmā yonimāśaye |
agniṣṭaṃ brahmaṇā saha niṣkravyādamanīnaśat
यस्ते॒ हन्ति॑ प॒तय॑न्तं निष॒त्स्नुं यः स॑रीसृ॒पम् ।
जा॒तं यस्ते॒ जिघां॑सति॒ तमि॒तो ना॑शयामसि
yaste hanti patayantaṃ niṣatsnuṃ yaḥ sarīsṛpam |
jātaṃ yaste jighāṃsati tamito nāśayāmasi
यस्त॑ ऊ॒रू वि॒हर॑त्यन्त॒रा दम्प॑ती॒ शये॑ ।
योनिं॒ यो अ॒न्तरा॒रेळ्हि॒ तमि॒तो ना॑शयामसि
yasta ūrū viharatyantarā dampatī śaye |
yoniṃ yo antarāreḻhi tamito nāśayāmasi
यस्त्वा॒ भ्राता॒ पति॑र्भू॒त्वा जा॒रो भू॒त्वा नि॒पद्य॑ते ।
प्र॒जां यस्ते॒ जिघां॑सति॒ तमि॒तो ना॑शयामसि
yastvā bhrātā patirbhūtvā jāro bhūtvā nipadyate |
prajāṃ yaste jighāṃsati tamito nāśayāmasi
यस्त्वा॒ स्वप्ने॑न॒ तम॑सा मोहयि॒त्वा नि॒पद्य॑ते ।
प्र॒जां यस्ते॒ जिघां॑सति॒ तमि॒तो ना॑शयामसि
yastvā svapnena tamasā mohayitvā nipadyate |
