The rishis are the Devajamis, the mothers of Indra, singing in gayatri. Busy and eager, they come near Indra at his birth and share in his heroic strength. Indra, you were born from might, from power and from vigour; you are the bull indeed. You are the slayer of Vritra; you spread out the mid-air and propped up heaven by your strength. You hold in your arms the singing bolt, of one mind with you, sharpening the vajra by your might. You overpower all born beings by your strength, and you have come to be in all places. The sukta is short and bright, a song over a newborn hero.
