What happens in this chapter
Shraddha, faith that kindles the fire
Shraddha Kamayani sings Shraddha herself in anushtubh. By faith Agni is kindled; by faith the offering is poured; we proclaim Shraddha at the head of good fortune. As the devas kept faith toward the fierce asuras, so make our word come true among the givers. Devas and yajamanas, guarded by Vayu, worship Shraddha; faith is won by the heart's intent, and by faith one finds wealth. We call Shraddha at dawn, at midday and at sunset. Shraddha, make us faithful here. This short sukta is the Veda's own word on faith as the root of yajna and giving.
प्रि॒यं श्र॑द्धे॒ दद॑तः प्रि॒यं श्र॑द्धे॒ दिदा॑सतः ।
प्रि॒यं भो॒जेषु॒ यज्व॑स्वि॒दं म॑ उदि॒तं कृ॑धि
priyaṃ śraddhe dadataḥ priyaṃ śraddhe didāsataḥ |
priyaṃ bhojeṣu yajvasvidaṃ ma uditaṃ kṛdhi
यथा॑ दे॒वा असु॑रेषु श्र॒द्धामु॒ग्रेषु॑ चक्रि॒रे ।
