The rishi is the divine gandharva Vishvavasu, in trishtubh; Savitar is the devata, and the Atman in verses four to six. Golden-haired Savitar, with the sun's rays, raises his unfailing light in the east, and Pushan goes in his impulse as herdsman of all worlds. Seated in the middle of heaven, he fills sky, earth and mid-air and looks on all forms, true in his law. The waters saw the gandharva Vishvavasu and parted by rta; Indra followed and saw the bounds of the sun. Vishvavasu, measurer of the regions, is asked to speak for us what is true and what we do not know, and to guard our thoughts.
