What happens in this chapter
Indra, lord of the five peoples
The singers praise Indra with songs, the chanters with chants, and words of praise have reached him. In this gayatri sukta Madhuchchhandas Vaishvamitra calls him the golden Vajra-bearer who rides with bay horses yoked by a word. Indra raised the sun in the sky so all could see far, and with the cows he split the rock. The poet asks for Indra's help in great contests and in small, and begs him to open that store of food for us. Like a bull leading the herd, he stirs the peoples by his might. He alone rules the wealth of the five peoples. Let him be ours alone.
इन्द्र॒ इद्धर्यो॒ः सचा॒ सम्मि॑श्ल॒ आ व॑चो॒युजा॑ ।
इन्द्रो॑ व॒ज्री हि॑र॒ण्यय॑ः
indra iddharyoḥ sacā sammiśla ā vacoyujā |
indro vajrī hiraṇyayaḥ

इन्द्र॒ वाजे॑षु नोऽव स॒हस्र॑प्रधनेषु च ।
उ॒ग्र उ॒ग्राभि॑रू॒तिभि॑ः
indra vājeṣu no'va sahasrapradhaneṣu ca |
ugra ugrābhirūtibhiḥ
इन्द्रं॑ व॒यं म॑हाध॒न इन्द्र॒मर्भे॑ हवामहे ।
युजं॑ वृ॒त्रेषु॑ व॒ज्रिण॑म्
indraṃ vayaṃ mahādhana indramarbhe havāmahe |
yujaṃ vṛtreṣu vajriṇam
स नो॑ वृषन्न॒मुं च॒रुं सत्रा॑दाव॒न्नपा॑ वृधि ।
अ॒स्मभ्य॒मप्र॑तिष्कुतः
sa no vṛṣannamuṃ caruṃ satrādāvannapā vṛdhi |
asmabhyamapratiṣkutaḥ
तु॒ञ्जेतु॑ञ्जे॒ य उत्त॑रे॒ स्तोमा॒ इन्द्र॑स्य व॒ज्रिण॑ः ।
न वि॑न्धे अस्य सुष्टु॒तिम्
tuñjetuñje ya uttare stomā indrasya vajriṇaḥ |
na vindhe asya suṣṭutim
वृषा॑ यू॒थेव॒ वंस॑गः कृ॒ष्टीरि॑य॒र्त्योज॑सा ।
ईशा॑नो॒ अप्र॑तिष्कुतः
vṛṣā yūtheva vaṃsagaḥ kṛṣṭīriyartyojasā |
īśāno apratiṣkutaḥ
य एक॑श्चर्षणी॒नां वसू॑नामिर॒ज्यति॑ ।
इन्द्र॒ः पञ्च॑ क्षिती॒नाम्
ya ekaścarṣaṇīnāṃ vasūnāmirajyati |
indraḥ pañca kṣitīnām
इन्द्रं॑ वो वि॒श्वत॒स्परि॒ हवा॑महे॒ जने॑भ्यः ।
अ॒स्माक॑मस्तु॒ केव॑लः
indraṃ vo viśvataspari havāmahe janebhyaḥ |
asmākamastu kevalaḥ
