Agni, come with the Maruts

Every one of these nine gayatri verses by Medhatithi Kanva ends with the same refrain: marudbhir agna a gahi, Agni, come with the Maruts. You are called to this lovely yajna to drink the milk. No god and no mortal goes beyond your will. Come with the Maruts who know the great mid-air and never deceive; the fierce ones who sing the chant and cannot be overcome; the bright ones of terrible form who destroy foes; those who sit in the shining vault of heaven; who toss the mountains across the sea and spread over the ocean with their rays. For you I pour the first draught of honeyed Soma.

19.1

प्रति॒ त्यं चारु॑मध्व॒रं गो॑पी॒थाय॒ प्र हू॑यसे ।
म॒रुद्भि॑रग्न॒ आ ग॑हि

prati tyaṃ cārumadhvaraṃ gopīthāya pra hūyase |
marudbhiragna ā gahi

19.2

न॒हि दे॒वो न मर्त्यो॑ म॒हस्तव॒ क्रतुं॑ प॒रः ।
म॒रुद्भि॑रग्न॒ आ ग॑हि

nahi devo na martyo mahastava kratuṃ paraḥ |
marudbhiragna ā gahi

ये म॒हो रज॑सो वि॒दुर्विश्वे॑ दे॒वासो॑ अ॒द्रुह॑ः ।
म॒रुद्भि॑रग्न॒ आ ग॑हि

ye maho rajaso vidurviśve devāso adruhaḥ |

य उ॒ग्रा अ॒र्कमा॑नृ॒चुरना॑धृष्टास॒ ओज॑सा ।
