What happens in this chapter

Indra and Varuna, the two sovereigns

I choose the help of Indra and Varuna, the two samrats; let them be kind to us in such a need. Medhatithi Kanva sings this short gayatri sukta to the pair as upholders of the peoples who come when a sage like him calls. Satisfy us with wealth as we wish, he asks. Indra is the giver of thousands, Varuna the one most worth praising. By their help may we win and store up riches, with plenty to spare. He calls them for wonderful bounty, asks them to make us victors, and begs for shelter while our thoughts strive to win.
