Signs of Kali: false teachers and false ascetics
Kakbhushundi describes to Garuda the Kali Yuga of his first birth. Varna dharma and the four ashramas were gone and people delighted in opposing the Shruti. Brahmins sold the Vedas, kings devoured their subjects, and no one obeyed scripture. The path was whatever pleased one, the pandit whoever talked loudest, the saint whoever made a show. The thief was called clever, the hypocrite pious, the liar and jester gifted. Whoever left the Vedic path passed for wise and detached; long nails and matted hair made a famous tapasvi. Those in inauspicious dress who ate anything were worshipped as yogis and siddhas.
