The sages send Himavan, who pleads with Girija and brings her home. Then the seven rishis go to Shiva and tell him all of Uma's story. Hearing of her love Shiva is absorbed in joy, and the rishis go home glad. Steadying his mind, the wise Shambhu sits in meditation on Raghunayaka. At that time the asura Taraka arises, mighty and blazing. He conquers all the worlds and their guardians, and the devas are stripped of joy and wealth. He cannot age or die and cannot be beaten; the devas fight in many ways and lose. They go crying to Brahma, who sees them in distress. Brahma explains: this demon will die only when a son is born of Shambhu's seed; he alone will win this battle.
