What happens in this chapter

Grief of the parents, gladness of Uma

Taking the sage's words as true, the parents grieve, while Uma rejoices. Even Narada did not grasp this secret; one and the same sentence was understood in two different ways. All of them tremble with brimming eyes. The words of the devarishi cannot prove false, and Uma keeps them hidden in her heart. Love for Shiva's lotus feet springs up in her, along with a worry that union with him will be hard. Seeing that this is no moment to show it, she hides her love and goes back to sit in a companion's lap. Steadying himself, the mountain king asks what remedy there is. Narada replies that what Vidhata writes on the forehead no deva, demon, man, Naga or sage can erase.
