The svayamvara and the ill-favoured face
The Lord explains: a sick man tormented by illness may beg for harmful food, but the physician will not give it; in that way He has settled Narada's good. Saying this He vanished. Under maya the muni had become foolish and did not grasp Hari's hidden meaning. He went straight to the svayamvara ground, where kings sat on their seats in fine array with their retinues. Narada rejoiced, sure that with such beauty the princess would choose no one but him. For his good, the merciful Lord had given him an ugly form beyond description. No one there could see it; all took him for Narada and bowed. Two of Shiva's ganas were present, knowing the whole secret, wandering in brahmin guise and much enjoying the sport.
