What happens in this chapter

The queens rejoice and prepare auspicious things

Those who first carried the news into the palace are rewarded with ornaments and garments. The women, thrilled with love, begin preparing pots of auspicious water. Sumitra lays out beautiful squares of many kinds, set with gems. Kausalya, Rama's mother, is lost in bliss; she calls the brahmanas and gives generous gifts. She worships the village goddess, the devas and the nagas, promises them further offerings, and prays that in their mercy they grant whatever brings Rama's welfare. Women with cuckoo voices, moon faces and fawn eyes sing songs of blessing. Hearing of the consecration, every man and woman of the city rejoices, and all begin to make ready, believing providence is now favourable.
