रायँ राम राखन हित लागी । बहुत उपाय किये छल त्यागी ॥
लखी राम रुख रहत न जाने । धरम धुरन्धर धीर सयाने ॥
rāyam̐ rāma rākhana hita lāgī | bahuta upāya kiye chala tyāgī ||
lakhī rāma rukha rahata na jāne | dharama dhurandhara dhīra sayāne ||

The king tries many honest ways to keep Rama back, but sees from Rama's look that he will not stay, steady, wise and firm in dharma. Then he draws Sita to his heart and counsels her with great tenderness, describing the unbearable hardships of the forest and the comforts of home with her parents-in-law and father. But Sita's mind is set on Rama's feet; home does not seem easy to her, nor the forest hard. Others too counsel her, dwelling on the dangers of the forest. The wise wives of the minister and of the guru say lovingly: you were not given exile; do as your father-in-law, guru and mother-in-law say. Their cool, kind, sweet advice does not please Sita, as the autumn moonlight distresses the chakvi.
