Kaikeyi enters the chamber of anger
Counting the hunchback dear as life, the queen praises her wisdom: no friend in the world is like you; you held me as I was being swept away. If providence grants my wish tomorrow, I will keep you as the apple of my eye. Then Kaikeyi goes to the kopa-bhavan. Tulsidas draws the picture: calamity is the seed, the maid the monsoon, Kaikeyi's corrupted mind the soil; watered by deceit it sprouts, the two boons its leaves, sorrow its fruit. She lays out every sign of anger and lies down, ruined by her own ill counsel. Meanwhile palace and city ring with festivity; no one knows of the plot, and crowds stream in and out of the royal court.
जौँ बिधि पुरब मनोरथ काली । करउँ तोहि चख पूतरि आली ॥
बहु बिधि चेरिहि आदर देई । कोपभवन गवनी कैकेई ॥

kopa-samāja sāji saba soī | rāja karata nija kumati bigoī ||
rāura nagara kolāhala hoī | yaha kucāli kachu jāna na koī ||
प्रमुदित पुर नर नारि । सब सजहिँ सुमङ्गलचार ।
एक प्रबिसहिँ एक निर्गमहिँ, भीर भूप-दरबार ॥
pramudita pura nara nāri | saba sajahim̐ sumaṅgalacāra |
eka prabisahim̐ eka nirgamahim̐, bhīra bhūpa-darabāra ||
