Crossing the Yamuna, Bharata walks barefoot

The company spends that day on the Yamuna bank. Through the night boats come in from ghat after ghat, more than can be counted, and at dawn all cross in a single passage, pleased with the service of Guha, Rama's friend. Bathing and bowing to the river, they set out. Vasishtha leads on his carriage, the royal company follows, and behind come the two brothers on foot, in plain clothes without ornaments, with servants, friends and ministers' sons. They keep Lakshmana, Sita and Rama in mind, and wherever Rama had stopped or rested, they bow there with love. Villagers leave home and work, run to see them, and feel their birth fulfilled.
