Sumantra finds Dasharatha in the dust

The queens question him anxiously, but no answer comes; his voice fails. He cannot hear or see, and asks anyone he meets where the king is. Seeing his state, maids lead him to Kausalya's apartments. There he sees the king like a moon without its nectar, lying on the bare ground, stripped of seat, bed and ornament, utterly forlorn. He sighs like Yayati fallen from heaven, and grief fills his chest moment by moment like Sampati dropping with burnt wings. The lover of Shri Rama cries 'Rama, Rama', then 'Rama, Lakshmana, Vaidehi'. In the doha Sumantra greets him with 'Victory, long life' and prostrates; hearing him, the king rises in agitation and asks, Sumantra, where is Rama?
