Surya reveals the gleaner who reached heaven

Surya answers the Nagas. That radiance was neither a deva, nor an asura, nor a serpent. It was a muni who had reached perfection by the vow of unchavritti, living on grain gleaned from fields after the harvest, and so went to heaven. He had lived on roots and fruit, fallen leaves, water, then air. He had praised Shiva with the Vedic samhitas and made his effort at heaven's gate. Without attachment and without craving, eating only what he gleaned, he was devoted to the good of all beings. The Naga tells the brahmana this is the wonder he saw: a mortal, fully perfected, reached the state of the siddhas and now circles the earth with Surya.
