Markandeya tells another account of a king's greatness. King Yayati, son of Nahusha, sat among his citizens when a Brahmin came seeking wealth for his guru's fee. He asked first for a promise, for begging, he said, makes the giver resent the one who asks. How then would the king give? Yayati replied that he never boasts of a gift, never listens to a request for what should not be asked, and is happiest when he promises and then gives. A Brahmin who asks is dear to him; his mind never grows angry at a request, and he never grieves over what he has given. Saying this, he gave the Brahmin a thousand red cows, and the Brahmin received them. The chapter is very short.
