Counting and arranging the metres

Suta closes the teaching on metre with the six methods of reckoning that Pingala's science uses. Prastara lays out every possible arrangement of heavy and light syllables for a line of given length, starting from all heavy. Nashta finds the pattern that stands at a given place in that list, by halving the number and marking light for even and heavy for odd. Uddishta does the reverse, finding the place of a given pattern by doubling. Sankhya gives the total number of patterns by doubling for each syllable. Meru, a triangle built by adding the two numbers above, shows how many patterns hold a given count of light syllables. The last rule gives the space the full layout takes, in finger-breadths. Suta calls this the chandas-sara, the pith of metre.
