What happens in this chapter
The order of worship in the mandala
Brahma gives the form of worship by which people reached the highest state. A plain mandala is drawn. At the door the worshipper honours Dhata and Vidhata, the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, the door's Shri, the guardians Danda and Prachanda, and the Vastu Purusha. In the centre come the supporting Shakti, the tortoise, Ananta and the Earth, then dharma, knowledge, detachment and lordship with their four opposites, and the lotus with its root, stalk, pericarp and filaments. The three gunas, the discs of sun, moon and fire, and the Shaktis beginning with Vimala follow. Durga, Ganesha, Sarasvati and the Kshetrapala sit in the corners. Last the seat and form are worshipped: Vasudeva, Balarama, Aniruddha and Narayana, with the limbs of the mantra and the conch and other weapons.

सामान्यमण्डलं न्यस्य धातारं द्वारदेशतः ।
विधातारं तथा गङ्गां यमुनां च महानदीम्
sāmānyamaṇḍalaṃ nyasya dhātāraṃ dvāradeśataḥ |
vidhātāraṃ tathā gaṅgāṃ yamunāṃ ca mahānadīm
द्वारश्रियं च दण्डं च प्रचण्डं वास्तुपूरुषम् ।
मध्ये चाधारशक्तिं च कूर्मं चानन्तमर्चयेत्
dvāraśriyaṃ ca daṇḍaṃ ca pracaṇḍaṃ vāstupūruṣam |
madhye cādhāraśaktiṃ ca kūrmaṃ cānantamarcayet
भूमिं धर्मं तथा ज्ञानं वैरग्यैश्वर्यमेव च ।
अधर्मादींश्च चतुरः कन्दं नालं च पङ्कजम्
bhūmiṃ dharmaṃ tathā jñānaṃ vairagyaiśvaryameva ca |
adharmādīṃśca caturaḥ kandaṃ nālaṃ ca paṅkajam
कर्णिकां केसरं सत्त्वं राजसं तामसं गुणम् ।
सुर्यादिमण्डलान्येव विमलाद्याश्च शक्तयः
karṇikāṃ kesaraṃ sattvaṃ rājasaṃ tāmasaṃ guṇam |
suryādimaṇḍalānyeva vimalādyāśca śaktayaḥ
दुर्गां गणं सरस्वतीं क्षेत्रपालं च कोणके ।
आसनं मूर्तिमभ्यर्च्य वासुदेवं बलं स्मरन्
durgāṃ gaṇaṃ sarasvatīṃ kṣetrapālaṃ ca koṇake |
āsanaṃ mūrtimabhyarcya vāsudevaṃ balaṃ smaran
अनिरुद्धं महात्मानं नारायणमथार्चयेत् ।
हृदयादीनि चाङ्गानि शङ्खादीन्यायुधानि च
